5 Day Sugar Detox Diary

I’m not at all against sugar. Of course, the white refined one is pure poison. But raw cane sugar, honey, cocos sugar, fruit, maple sirup? Oh yes, bring it on :)) The thing is that my body started telling me something.

My spleen hurt, which was probably a sign it had to deal with too much sugar. So I decided to use this as a little motivation to do a sugar cleanse.

Important note: with sugar, I don’t mean the white refined crap. In this article, sugar refers to any healthy sugar alternatives, including fruit.

DAY ONE | IT SUCKS

Ok I can do this. My body clearly needs a little break from everything sweet, so I’m starting the day with a clean start.

NO SUGAR, JUST CLEAN, SIMPLE FOOD TODAY.

My spleen is asking for soup (advice from our amazing nutritionist Hikari) so that’s lunch & dinner with some crackers.

But what to have for breakfast? Usually I would eat oatmeal with some fruit, raisins or honey. But now it’s just plane oatmeal. Ok I added a chopped date, that’s ok right?? :S

Lunch was good, but usually in the winter I would end it with a healthy desert of home made cookies, dark chocolate or fruit with some sesame paste.

BUT LET’S DO THIS COLD TURKEY, THAT’S LESS CONFUSING.

DAY TWO | POOR FISH

I actually feel good! Spleen still hurts a bit so that’s a good reminder whenever I feel like something sweet. Woke up and didn’t feel like a sweet breakfast, instead had a spelt cracker or two. It feels a bit like a fresh start.

At lunch I actually craved fish…being a vegetarian for over 14 years who’s only eating fish when someone already made it and puts it in front of her (I think throwing it away is much worse).

THIS WAS NOT A NICE SURPRISE. POOR FISH.

But I figured this is what I need today and I only eat fish once or twice a year. So I thanked the fish on my plate and really savoured every bite.

DAY THREE | I THINK IT’S A HABIT

Just woke up without sweet breakfast craving. That’s a first! Had some almonds and tea as there was not much food in the house.

I decided once again to go with what I felt like, which resulted in a soup, hummus and some spelt bread at lunch. Didn’t feel like anything sweet after lunch. I think it was just a habit and not really a ‘need’.

AND THE GREAT THING IS: SPLEEN DOESN’T HURT ANYMORE. SO IT WORKED!

Can I stop now? Ok wow, I’m addicted.

DAY FOUR | A BIT OF HONEY

Throat hurts! Since I don’t like to be dogmatic or do things just because my mind decided to do so, I start the day with tea, crackers with sesame paste & some raw throat-soothing honey.

INTERESTING TO NOTICE THAT THE SWEET TASTE IS ACTUALLY QUITE ADDICTIVE.

I feel like I need a lot of willpower to stop after just a tablespoon.

All right lunch was hard! I craved something sweet afterwards. Again without dogma or force, I asked myself what would happen if I didn’t have something sweet (nothing sweet in the house anyway: honey’s gone since this morning).

The answer: nothing. I’m all right without it, so this was just a ‘mindcraving’ instead of a real bodycraving.

DAY FIVE | ALMONDS ARE AWESOME

My sweet friend & nutritionist Hikari recommended eating almonds to bust sugar cravings. Hell yeah that works! Had almonds as ‘desert’ after lunch and noticed craving fade.

SHIT, I’M OUT OF ALMONDS NOW.

Instead, new jar of honey just came into the house –> can’t resist a bit of that delicious raw gold post-dinner. Oh well…

SO NOW WHAT??

These 5 days were harder than I thought they would be. But, I’m so glad that I’ve done this! I noticed a few things:

  • I feel much better
  • my spleen doesn’t hurt anymore
  • I noticed a BIG difference in my energy: no highs & lows throughout the day
  • I’m much more grounded, calmer and at peace
  • I focus more on healthy protein when I can’t eat sugar
  • I actually don’t like the sweet taste so much anymore

These are all quite nice things, don’t you think? I was so surprised how addicted sugar is & how little it actually does for my body.
